Recently, I was inspired to work on a pulp noir story set in NYC in the late 1940s. I’ve been working on blurb writing for some Race Williams stories, as well as a healthy dose of noir films: The Maltese Falcon, Out of the Past, etc. Anyway, I decided to dive in and see what I could detect.
I’ve been writing for a couple weeks now and it looks like I’m on my way to my first full-length novella or novel. I’m past 30k words, so I’m not sure where it’ll go from here. I’ve been letting the story “come to me” instead of planning out the whole mystery beforehand. Although I don’t do this often, it feels more exhilarating writing a story this way.
For inspiration (along with the films), I’ve been listening to Bohren & Der Club of Gore, a German Jazz band, and rain and thunder sounds on repeat. The combo is really inspirational for a pulp noir detective story.
I’m not sure what’ll become of this story yet, but I’ve had loads of fun writing it so far. Keep and eye out.
